Exciting Reasons Why Your Dog Might Not Be Obeying Your Commands!

  1. They're Overstimulated

  2. The Communication Isn't Clear

  3. You're Not the Leader

Overstimulation

When your dog becomes overly excited, fixated, or worried about a situation, it often happens because the owner missed a crucial opportunity to address something the dog found very important—like an unfamiliar dog, a strange noise, or a fast-moving vehicle or cyclist. There was a moment when your dog was calm and began reacting slightly to the environment; that was your chance to reassure them not to worry and let them know you have everything under control. Instead, your dog felt compelled to take charge and protect both you and themselves!

The Communication Isn't Clear

Dogs are naturally inclined to follow a calm and confident leader, due to their evolutionary background. If you issue a command, whether verbally or non-verbally, but aren't in a calm and assertive state, your message will be unclear to your dog. They'll detect instability and won't trust you to lead the pack. Sometimes, communication becomes unclear because you're asking while also hoping the command will be effective. Your dog interprets this as uncertainty and might choose to act independently!

You're Not the Leader

This indicates that your dog has assumed the role of leader, showing they are the dominant, more capable, and competent decision-maker for the pack. This change in dynamics might result from unmet needs, emotional instability, or the owner not taking responsibility for their dog's behavior, perhaps believing that external factors dictate the situation and feeling powerless to influence their dog's actions.
