1. Mental & Physical Exercise

Dogs have a level of energy that requires expression physically and mentally. Some may need 20minutes others for up to 2 hours. Teaching a dog to follow opposed to them leading the walk/run fulfils the mental aspect. Exercise at a dog park only is not ideal for particular dogs. Asking for help from a dog trainer may be needed to learn how to do this.

2. Saying hello and Goodbye

Although this is normal for humans, Dog's do not naturally practice this social behaviour. Exciting a dog through affection and verbally communicating with them before you leave home and when you return can teach them that being excited is how to get attention. Teaching them to be calm before leaving and giving affection once calm on returning lowers their level of excitement.

3. Feed a calm state of mind

In nature, dogs have to be excited to run, chase & catch their prey, but since we take care of that need for them its best to feed them once they are calm, a perfect time for this is after the walk/run.

4. Nighttime cuddles

One of the most rewarding aspects of owning a dog is sharing a cuddle. Routinely performing tips 1,2 and 3, then smothering our dogs with affection helps calming an over-excited dog.

The above tips aim to reward a dog for calm behaviour. Dog's are then able to live in a very human orientated environment without struggling to reach a balanced mind. In my opinion, it equates to a happier doggie.
